If you've spent any time researching how to grow textured hair longer, you've probably run into a wall of conflicting advice. Castor oil grows your hair inches per month. Peppermint oil is a scam. Rosemary is the new minoxidil. Nothing works, only genetics matter.
The truth sits in the middle, and it depends on what you actually mean by "growth." Here's what growth oils genuinely do for textured hair, which ingredients have real evidence behind them, and how to build them into a routine that produces visible results.
Growth vs length retention: know the difference
Hair grows about half an inch per month, roughly six inches per year, and there's no oil that meaningfully changes that rate for most people. Genetics and health drive it.
What you can change is how much of that growth you keep. Textured hair (3C through 4C) has natural twist points where strands snag and break, and tighter curls make it harder for your scalp's oils to travel down the strand. Both of those turn into breakage, and breakage is what makes it feel like your hair "won't grow" even when it is.
Growth oils help on both fronts: they support the scalp environment where new growth happens, and they seal moisture into the strand so what grows in stays intact. That's the real mechanism behind "growth oil" claims for textured hair, and it's why consistent use over months (not weeks) shows up as visible length gain.
The four ingredients that actually earn their spot
Castor oil. The one everyone's heard of. Castor oil is thick and rich in ricinoleic acid, which has some evidence for anti-inflammatory effects on the scalp. It doesn't make hair grow faster in the follicle sense, but it does an excellent job of coating the strand and sealing moisture in, which is where the "grew inches" testimonials come from (people are retaining length, not growing faster). Haitian black castor oil is roasted before pressing, which gives it a smokier scent and slightly different consistency than the cold-pressed Jamaican version. Both work. Peppermint oil. A 2014 mouse study (Rho et al.) showed peppermint oil at 3% concentration outperformed minoxidil for hair growth over four weeks. The study was in mice, not humans, and 3% is a specific concentration you should never exceed on the scalp without dilution, but the mechanism is real: peppermint stimulates blood flow to the scalp, and better circulation supports the follicle. It's a legitimate ingredient, not a scam, when it's formulated properly.
Fenugreek. A traditional South Asian and African hair ingredient with real staying power. Fenugreek seeds are high in protein and lecithin, and topical fenugreek preparations have modest evidence for reducing hair fall and improving hair thickness. It also smells earthy and specific, which is why it's usually blended into a formula rather than used solo.
Rosemary. A 2015 human trial found rosemary oil produced hair-count results comparable to minoxidil 2% over six months, with less scalp itch. It's the growth oil with the strongest human evidence, and it's worth looking for in a formula.
Our Peppermint, Fenugreek & Mango Madness Hair Growth Oil pairs peppermint and fenugreek with mango butter, and it's one of the reasons this product sits near the top of our organic traffic. People try it, they see the length retention over a few months, and they come back.
How to actually use a growth oil (the part most guides skip)
- Scalp application, not strand application. Growth oils work on the scalp, where the follicles are. Massage a few drops directly into the scalp with your fingertips (not your nails). Five minutes of massage improves circulation on top of what the oil does.
- Twice a week is plenty. More is not better. Over-oiling the scalp clogs follicles and traps buildup, which slows growth. Twice a week, ideally the night before a wash day, is the sweet spot.
- Wash it out. Growth oils are pre-wash treatments for most textured-hair routines. Apply, sleep on a satin scarf or pillowcase, wash out with a sulfate-free shampoo the next day. If you're using a lighter oil like rosemary-only, you can leave it in.
- Combine with a length-retention routine. Growth oil on the scalp does nothing if you're breaking off your ends between wash days. Seal your ends with a heavier oil or butter after your leave-in, wear protective styles when your hair is stressed, and keep your protein-moisture balance in check. Our Textured Hair Care Guide covers the full routine.
- Give it three months. Growth oils are not fast. If you're expecting results in two weeks, you'll quit before it works. Three months of consistent, twice-weekly use is the honest timeline for seeing meaningful length retention.
The Canadian shopper's edge
Buying growth oils in Canada has historically meant either paying for slow US shipping or accepting whatever's on the drugstore shelf. Neither is ideal for textured hair, where the formulations matter and the specialty ingredients (Haitian castor, quality fenugreek) aren't at Shoppers.
Everything we carry ships from within Canada, no border delays, and shipping is free on orders over $75. Browse the full Haircare collection, and if you haven't identified your curl pattern yet, start with our hair-type guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does castor oil actually grow hair?
Not in the follicle-growth sense. Castor oil seals moisture into the strand and reduces breakage, which lets more of your existing growth stay on your head. Over months, that shows up as length gain. That's the honest mechanism.
Is peppermint oil safe for the scalp?
Diluted, yes. Never apply undiluted peppermint essential oil to your scalp, it can burn. A formulated growth oil that includes peppermint at the right concentration is safe and effective for most people. Patch-test first if you have sensitive skin.
How often should I use growth oil?
Twice a week, applied to the scalp the night before wash day. More often clogs follicles.
Can I leave growth oil in without washing?
It depends on the formula. Rich oils like castor should be washed out. Lighter oils (rosemary alone, jojoba blends) can be left in on the scalp. Our Peppermint, Fenugreek & Mango Madness Growth Oil is a pre-wash formula, wash out the next day.
How long until I see results?
Three months of consistent, twice-weekly use is the honest minimum. Six months is where most people see clear length retention.
